Post by: Paint Your Wagon on April 26, 2008, 06:37:42 AM: There was a small announcement I saw quite by accident at the bottom of my ebay ( my wife's) that ebay belgium no longer offers any buyers protection unless you pay with paypal ??? ??? ??? So they withdrew their lousy 200 euro on which you had to pay 20 euro of file cost

My ebay (germany) did not have that announcement but had an announcement that sellers using an unknown computer from friend or library or whatever ; better have a working telephonenumber cause they will be telephoned to confirm they are the seller of the item
This will work by way of a flashcookie whatever that may be ??? ??? ???

So are they going for paypal insurance only and more protection ? Anything like this happening in the US or Australia ?

PayPal will automatically give you the protection up to $2,000 (if I remember correctly) for using their service. And, quite honestly I know it works as I have turned to them on 2 different occassions to get my winning auction delivered or money refunded. Seems most sellers find out very quickly PayPal means business and the protection is very valid. Both times the problem was settled in my favor, once with a refund and the other with product being shipped. It would seem to me that Ebay and PayPal are making the move to include other nations under this blanket coverage and I have NO complainst with PayPal or Ebay for doing so as it will protect buyers and sellers world wide from worthless sellers. If they don't pay up they will get the boot from Ebay for good!

First in Europe any seller is allowed to ask 5% extra if paypal is used (or outright forbids it ) and everybody is paying interbank at no cost
So the cost goes up a 5% for a possible coverage of 1000 Euro for which you have to read the fine print on ebay and at 5 % extra cost
and god only knows what they deduct in expenses
If you are carefull it is not worth 5% in the EU only outside the EU since they accept paypal without extra especially the pound people and I never seen they ask 5% So it is probably illigal there

A at least one time reputable Canadian paper money dealer. I will see what rolls on Monday. I definitely want my funds back, and really no longer want the item as it has been too much hassle with no response.

First they give them the opportunity to respond, once it reaches the official complaint stage, and then they lock up the sellers account for up to 60 days or until things get settled. This can really hurt a seller who does have funds remaining in his/her account at the time. My first dispute took a couple of weeks to settle but the last one only a few days. One thing is for certain Scottishmoney you will get the refund or the product after that complaint is filed! Keep us posted!

A few years back I bought sixty silver eagles from an american with like 300 positive feedbacks
He sold like 2000 of them and did not have them and could not buy them when silver shot up and he was broke anyway
I wrote ebay and the governor and the board of fair trade and the subbranch of the FBI and everybody I could think off
A certain disgracefull policeofficer called COCO asked me I got what I want and in passing let it be known this was not
the first time this greek legal alien pulled of this stunt on ebay
After that COCO was no longer responding to emails ; so much for the american police system ; and ebay requested a copy of all correspondance like 1 pound of fotocopies to be sent to an address in Germany . After like 4 months I got 200 minus 20 is 180 euro for what was a 500 euro loss
And about 200 emails and tons of hassle
Never ever again will I buy were I cannot go to the local police and be legal plaintif which is all of the EU now
A guy from Texas who went to small claims court got double awarded and the crooked greek paid him once and probably dared him to go to court again
One by one the big swindled parties were paid off but me and the single tube buyers were left dangling cause the thief knew well enough we would not or could not go to small claims court .
I gave his name to Belgian airport people so that if he ever goes back to greece by way of Belgium they will know him

I even tried to report him to the IRS but as a non american that was impossible

I better forget about Spiros ??? ??? ???

This is the lowest 31 days period I ever had on ebay
Either I see junk, or I see zero feedback sellers, or I see pros with a minimum price too high above melt
So I bought outside ebay from an internet shop a few tubes of Wiener Philharmoniker 1.5 Euro with a 2 weeks delivery delay
I bought in that shop before and price is confirmed
Also I stopped asking anybody saying germany and austria and switzerland only if they would consider belgium
50 or so said yes in the past
One insulted me by asking what part of germany only I did not understand and i could only qualify if I had relatives in germany
It was very hard for me to refrain from answering my last relative left in 1945 after eating grass and worms for 5 years on a workfarm as POW

Worse. Australia is being forced to use Paypal as the only payment option when using feebay. For some reason Paypal Australia has extra fees for just about everything and is troublesome, glitchy and painfully slow clearing e-checks. The result being many sellers and buyers have quit feebay and use the alternate Australian auction site Oztion.

Then I bought a 17th century Irish token, back in early March, still do not have it, seller claiming had to wait for an export permit! What? I buy an Irish token from a seller in England and they have to get an export permit? On a Â£30 item? In January I bought the Scottish gold coin, from a well known and establish London dealer(no eBay), nothing about an export permit etc. and the item is significantly more consequential to British history.

I buy stuff from rather high priced paper money sellers, and you wonder why you pay the firm price, but then you get friendly communication through the whole process, and request for want lists etc. I already have tracking numbers for a purchase made on Thursday, and hopefully should have those goods by Wednesday or so. With regards the Irish token, I am losing hope of ever getting it, and think my second paypoo claim in a week will be in order in a few days. With the one Canadian dealer I bought much stuff from him in the past, but it appears as though he turned the business over to his daughter and son in law and they are crapping it up for him. I maybe leaving a negative for them very soon.

If someone made some comment to me about my relatives in Germany, I can honestly say, they were bombed out in 1943 during the raid on Hamburg. How would that be for a comeback? :o

Now they are vulnarable to legal attack by anybody with enough initiative or money
On the continent their best market is germany and germans don't take it lying down I am sure
So they started with little belgium I guess to see what reactions are on not insuring anything anymore if you do not pay for paypal
It probably is illigal to force paypal since we got a new European law forcing banks to accept international payments
at no extra cost within the union . The banks would ask up to 20 euro for transfor to another euro country before this law
This law and protection of the people saving money is seen as key protection
( The savings law is supposed to protect people from being sold products like the bank that sold liveinsurance to my 91 year old mother for 10 years so that everytime she asked money before the age of 101 she had to pay a big penalty ) She died broke

My mother was bombed out by the UK allies no less
Luckily she was not home
The RAF had this nasty habit of missing the railway repair depot by as much as 10 miles especially on foggy days when they did not want to go back with
full bomb bays I suppose

Yeah you got that with foreign imports no quality
If I remember correctly we got independant in 1830 and only found a king in 1831 cause the job was not intresting or maybe not well paid

I forgot under which king this was but i remember from school i think that at one time there was the first flemish activist who had been killed and he got like a decent burial until a marechaussee ( that is police on horse ) shot into his casket to make sure he staid dead

At another time somebody talking to the king made a true observation I think

Well actually the monarchy back then was being able to get away with whatever you wanted, wild sex romps etc. Look at the 19th century male British monarchs before Victoria, they were all involved with many many women, and probably a few other men as well. Belgium being a small and newly independent country did not offer much in the way of aristocratic sex romp apparently. In fact the Belgian and Netherlands monarchies by and by are some of the more boring and apparently androgynous in all of Europe.

I never thought about that since I think Belgium is Petro-Fina-Elf territory and some BP and Shell
I think Kuwait selling under the name of Q8 left
But at 9.45 dollars a gallon for 98 octane for the car I can understand the distribution is living on the vapours what in
french is called La part des anges ;D
( It is presumed by taxpeople that a certain promille is lost during all those transfers and if you do better that is pocket money or the part for the angels)

Back during WWI not a very popular company here, because the Dutch were trading with the Germans and supplying them with petroleum product.

Lately I have had one positive experience with an eBay seller, another would be positive if the thing showed up - but I believe seller in Venezuela sent it, it just never came, and another situation that I could defecate on. I have with only two exceptions had to contact sellers of high priced items and extract information from them on whether item sent, tracking number etc. I am about ready to KMA eBay as a buying venue.

Also a lot of "new" sellers mygrating to selling a foreign goldcoin with a germany only warning which was allright for selling old jeans and old t-shirts and then committing the ultimate folly of using DHL at double the price of German post

I just succumbed to asking a guy in a wheelchair if I would be allowed to bid .
He was surprisingly nice , probably never even considered a foreigner might want to buy a foreing coin ::)

I think once gold takes off in september that my buying days are over . I do not want to risk another 1980 . I figure that if I stop buying around
650 euro I will never suffer a loss in this lifetime ( that was the high at 1000 dollars )

All I had to do with the image was crop the black background. BTW a very very nice original exceptional paper quality and well centered note at a very low bid.

First thing he did was fold it in four ( ouch )

Since nobody accepts these notes in a shop I wanted to scan it for myself because I probably will never see one like that again .
The bank gives me a stack of 50 Euro used notes

Canon driver said error error you may have wrongly placed the object whatever I tried
Silverfast driver was a lot more explicit , it said I was trying to scan a banknote and would be allowed but that it would attach a refuse to print and gave a website for all of the world with the legislation in vigor for scanning , printing or sharing electronically banknotes .

72 dpi max and specimen printed over 70% of the surface is the Belgian requirement . I was downright amazed cause I thought that that only writing on it or tearing it in two was forbidden . ???

I often take my offspring to coin shows with me, where they often rack up the assortment of free and near free goodies. Cannot tell you how many times I have heard the unfortunate comment that my children were the first that the dealers had seen in all of the day that actually were polite and appreciate in the form of thanking for the goodies. One time my then 10 year old daughter(has a serious eye for expensive and rare coins) were talking to a Russian dealer, she wanted to look through his $10(junk, okay $10! is junk?) box, and she picked out a Moldavia Wallachia 2 Kopek from 1772 and he sold it to her at that price, even though it is worth far more. I asked her what she liked about the coin, she said she just wanted it, and couldn't explain why. Curiously maybe there was some secret connection to the coin, nobody thought of. She was born right near where it was minted. She even picked out my Athenian Tetradrachm a few years ago.

My brother prefers satelite connections and hothouses and garden ponds etc

My family is fairly old which can be deduced from the spelling of my family name
They also seem to produce a lot of girls
There are about 12 people with my name in the 11 million people phone book ; my father assured me that it was all family.

I told my brother and my nephew that allthough I was his godfather the next gift would be at his wedding :P

That would be the EURion detector. Most banknotes designed this millennium contain a distinctive, repeating pattern, dubbed the Eurion constellation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation). Manufacturers of printers, cameras and scanners and image editing software companies have now written into their software the ability to detect the EURion pattern, and take preventive action. I'd heard about it, but never heard a personal testimony of a note collector actually being blocked by it before.

Definitely a case where "old technology is better". I've got an old scanner with old drivers and use and old graphics program, and don't plan on upgrading any of them anytime soon.

I recall a witty observation about the EURion; I think it was made in NewScientist magazine when the system was first rolled out:

If EURion recognition software becomes entrenched in all digital imaging system software, then all a criminal would have to do to become invisible would be to wear the EURion prominently on a T-shirt; any security camera systems would blank out whenever it spotted them. ::)

To finally get this image I had to tweak the settings down on the dpi and contrast, otherwise everytime I scanned it it would automatically rotate the image by about 15 degrees or so. Practically anytime you have a very dense and fine engraving with alternating patterns like on this note, it will likely wreak havoc with the scanned image. So see, by example, it doesn't have to be a modern banknote to create such anomalies, just a very technically advanced old design.

I used a paralel to usb cable and then I tried two dozen drivers on xp but xp just refused even to see the scanner
I tried experimental software and photoshop told me I had no scanner
So after two months I bought a new scanner and put the win 98 SE computer in the cellar cause the fan was like an airoplane taking of
and I retired the old scanner

I can only say the new scanner will focus perfectly through capsules which the old one could not

If this coin is really an original why not restore it .I see a fingerpint at 10 o'clock on the obverse

I used to ask for better pics and they would pm me the same crap thinking it would look better then on ebay cause it was a direct pm
I am willing to buy a MDP coin in box with certificate and trust it was an investment by somebody who could not care to open the box ::)
but not an old Belgian from somebody who would probably describe the coin as nice

I just got a 1982 Monegask essai and the certificate is not even folded . I have never ever seen an unfolded certificate in my life . This investor thinks gold is going to plunge and he is liquidating all his essais he bought . Coin is welded in plastic of course ??? My luck to catch him liquidating .

Monnaie de Paris was stupid enough to put a warped coin in a straight capsule so that it rotated all the way to its destination inside the
capsule creating the opaque ring on the capsule and friction damage on both sides of the coin
This coin was owned in silver by many dudes on the old forum

I have a log on id I use on Germany and Austria and Italy and Spain and the UK the Netherlands and France etc
My wife uses a differend logon id for Belgium
We are both registered on ebay Belgium

I do not know why but if I want to buy something she saw with her log in id I have to put the item number in search and half the time it does not find the item
So I have to try and log on into ebay Belgium confusing the hell out of my computer who only recognizes her logon into ebay Belgium and once I have logged in
she cannot login anymore cause now the computer only recognizes my id in Belgium

So yes ; my american coindealing friend told me the only way to buy is to put the item number in the American ebay
Another pain is that if I am logged into my ebay germany which I always do that if I want to add an item to my ebay from France or Belgium i have to open again my ebay for that country . So on a busy day I could be logged into 5 different My ebays to add items

On ebay bashing . An ebay manager in Germany was reported not to trust Paypal and refuse its use unless identity was proven . What a joke. This was allover the German net ::)

I was thinking the same
If they want to go to square coins of the same weight buying an injection mould for square capsules would cost like 5000 Euro which would add less then a euro per coin over the production life.
Now you got a square peg in a round hole ;D

Yes and they will never learn
After their painfull slip up with the last goldfranc by Starck which got delivered damaged they should know better about capsules
At least they put a stop in this capsule so the coin cannot rotate and only bang up and down
I should call it a goldbar with denomination though since a coin is made to roll (spend) we say in Flemish

Don't remember, off the top of my empty head, just what year it was minted but it did cause a stir! You should see some of their currency. Beautiful native woman with bare breast riding a dolphin! Very pleasing design and much more attractive than the coin in question! ;D

BTW, the item from my worst ever, in over 11 years of being on eBay experience has finally arrived, and the items are nice. But the seller, an auction house, are bungheads. The auction was over a month ago, and the items only arrived today, after a protracted 16+ emails, 5+ calls exchange, whilst they misplaced my charge card, misplaced the items etc. That coupled with an arrogant, "we are trying to please 500+ customers right now, can't you just be patient?" attitude earned them the marked distinction of my onliest ever negative feedback left for a seller on eBay.

eBay is biting the farm in my opin. I have tired of selling on there for all the regs, paypoo etc. nonsense. This otherwise "reputable" live auction house has gotten two negs in the past three days, one does wonders how many more shall be arriving to them thus?

I had several emails from a very angry german I paid 22 Euro ::)
He sold a silver coin and in a seperate auction the box and the certificate with worldwide delivery and a very complicated text only in german were he said that the pic was uncleaned ( meaning the coin ) So I did not take the rest of his convoluted text literally and got only a naked coin and gave his first in life neutral .
He squeeled like a stuck pig that he got a 1000 sales and this stupid effing belgian who does not understand german effed him and lost him his 100% score ( and he could not even retaliate )
I unloaded enough frustration to be satisfied for a while and gave a nice positive to the bank selling the Infante Marie Marguerite at melt covered in fingerprints 8)

The worst country I find for excluding foreign bidders is England. Sometimes when I am on eBay.uk I notice something like 40-50% of auctions have only the UK checked as a ship location. Lately I have had to buy several banknotes from sellers in Germany and Netherlands because they have stuff I cannot seem to find anywhere else. I have just purchased a couple of rare Danish banknotes this way.

My guess is that the seller is not that far into the coin, probably had for a while, because he has been slowly selling off large sized gold coins on eBay accd to his feedback over the last few months. He appears to have honoured every sale.

I search for cheap gold, but have to put in negs in the search string like -mini, -replica etc. The amount of that garbage almost makes the search not worth the trouble.

and several times over -- it's been cleaned quite a bit. he probably had to rub it on his nose to get that much grease on it -- he should have mixed in some sulfur -- at least the tone would be more accurate.

BIC is bank identifier code
IBAN is international bank account number

Rules . You have to live in the european union , you have to have a bankaccount in euro so british only comply if they open a euro account : under those circumstances all european transfers in euro only cost the same as a transfer in the country of origin which in my case is zero since I pay a fee per month of 2.5 euro whatever I do .

Here's a story:
Years ago when I was more naive, I tried to buy a used Tag Heuer watch on eBay.
I made a bid, and shortly thereafter I discovered the watch was an Asian knockoff (obvious by small details).
I declined to pay, citing a forgery, and the seller actually threatened legal action.

So I took some legal action of my own, now armed with better knowledge of these watches.
I copied down all the seller's fake watch auction #s--and any others I found--and faxed them to Tag Heuer's legal counsel.
That made a big dent on eBay for a while--and it just took a few hours of my time. ;D Why can't eBay do the same? ::)

So I gave him a resounding negative feedback

The effing vendor cannot give a revenge neg anymore on ebay germany but he went and reclaimed the posting cost and said both seller and vendor agreed not to have a deal ???
So I told ebay in the most polite terms what happened appending the emails from the vendor .

After a week ebay sent me a 20 euro voucher saying they hoped I was not discouraged by the contretemps ::)

It is quoted vendor will sell in germany only and at 4000 pieces it is not really rare
I have seen though that in general the germans like the Russian coins like the ones with the seal of Ivan
However I only pay those collector premiums for coins that are at least 150 years old

I never thrusted banks because they allways made mistakes and allways treated you as a pauper when you came to complain
Now since the start of the year I do not trhust them because they can go bankrupt

Must be pretty nice to have an unlimited bank account with NO chance of an overdraw. Just squeeze it out of the taxpayers! Still like to see that coin in silver and get it at a fair price. Wasn't too long ago we had to pay dearly to get coins literally smuggled out of the Soviet Union but now it seems to have eased up a bit but with that came higher prices. Go figure?

It seems to me that according to Krause starting with the 2 escudos 1868 (68) they put a date between brackets
also the 1865 is stated 175 $ uncirculated and the 1868 (68) 1500 $ uncirculated

Far down the page for a 10 peseta 1878(62) Krause states that the date between brackets is a 1962 restrike from original dies
for 85 $ uncirculated. On the internet I found that 19 should be in the left star next to the date and 62 in the right star next to the date
making it clear that 1878 is a restrike from 1962

My confusion is what does it mean when the date between brackets is the same like 1868(68) and why would a restrike if it is one be 8.5 times more
expensive then an original form 1865
Krause gives no strike numbers so I do not know that mintage is part of the answer

Well, 1868 was the year that Spain started to use the dates on the star system (silver and gold), before that was like everywhere else, none of the coins minted before had the date on the stars (which was easier now that the Seville - 7 pointed star - and Barcelona - 8 pointed star - had stopped minting coins).
I.E.: The (68) coins are not restrikes, but the (62) are restrikes (very obvious because they weren't dates on the stars before 1868...)

...and the only spanish restrikes are the Alfonso XII gold coins.

The (62) restrikes are common but (61) restrikes are quite scarce!

Oh but it would be shipping dangerous goods and only possible by boat like 50$ and then 18 % value added tax and 20% or so import tax and 15 $ collection fee and it would arrive in september when customs feel like working again cause the wharehouse is filled to the top
Nah I am used to paying 52% direct tax and 18% VAT at 300% mark up prices
I do not want to cheat the vendors out of a living >:(

I use now a search filter that is so long with the string of exclusions of crap that IE refuses to save it as a bookmark

Since they are ALL damaged I guess it does not matter much . I personally do not like toning since it changes constantly

Another problem I am having, just as you are, is the mere fact sellers have learned ways to figure out how to NOT sell if they don't get the desired price. Just this week a seller, whom I had won an auction for a glider (plane) for my little boy, notified me he would be refunding my money immediately as most of his shipment was damaged. My answer to that was bull ____! You can't tell me he did not inspect the contents when they were delivered? The fact of the matter, after checking his other auctions for the same plane, was I got a heck of a deal on the auction I won as it was far below his "Buy it Now" price on the same item. Also my auction was offered with FREE SHIPPING so the seller would not make squat. He cancelled because he could and it is as simple as that.
I have had dealers in the past, who lost big money, simply tell me the coin was lost or it would be weeks before it could be located as they were moving into a new building. Yeah right! I insisted on waiting and made that dealer send me the $60 coin I bought for $12. I can play the game just like they do!

After two days the professional store said the book was returned to them by the postoffice because some date was wrong
Three days later I got the book and as suspected apart from the printed postage stamp there was no date whatsoever

I have been told by persons that have done it that if you offer 500 euro outside of ebay for a coin worth 500 euro and you can pick up the item
it suddenly gets delisted with no cost to the vendor and no risk to the buyer
Unfortunately I am not going to drive to germany for a coin but between all the crap I have to look at and damaged goods and cheap purchases getting refunded , I am quitting in a few months when goldprices are probably going to explode

Go for it and make it a copper strike first silvered and then guilded so you can say it
is guilded silver . Say it is very rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrare at only numbers one to ten
and the number them A1-till A10 etc till Z1 till Z10 then AA1 till AA10 :

Looking at the picture it was no Dip and no Q-tip
Probably a copper cleaning fluid to make it shine
It is retoning so the cleaning should have been 20 years ago
The interesting question is ; are there scratchlines under 12X maginification
visible
If not in another 20 years it will retone so that virtually no average collector can see
the cleaning any more .
So might be an intresting coin for somebody that still has 20 years time to wait >:(

When I was 12 I cleaned a dozen napoleons with sidol copper cleaner because I liked them sparkling
When I tried to sell them later I lost 5% of value because of the cleaning and they were generic coins ; probably sold for full price to the next client

So I asked myself what is dirty ? Fingerfat and dirt .
So I put the coins in a row on top of the kitchen cupboards
I was making french fries every day in those days .
I turned the coins over regularly for 2 months untill the were sticky as hell
I then went to the cellar and toke the dust from the wine bottles and smeared it on
till the coins were no longer sticky .
I then sold most of them to an exchange agent who does not take out a magnifying glass
on routing coins and I had won 5 % .

I still have a few of the coins cleaned in the 60's and it is impossible to see 50 years later
which coins were cleaned unless you take out 10X maginification
They retoned nicely .
My coindeling friend retones them with a bunsenburner in 5 minutes ::)

From 2016 on I may sell some
With that in view I do not buy anything under melt anymorebecause I may just be able to sell at melt minus 10 % and have to drive twice for evaluation and payment

I am now focussing on sovereigns and napoleons but that is not easy to get at melt
However I just oredered a 2006 mexican ounce at melt and that was luck
it being sold on a german forum

Starting price is 2.5$ a gram that is 78$ an ounce for the goldplated silver and lets guestimate 5 dollar for the goldplating that is 73$ for the silver
And he says replica has not to be imprinted since it is an original design ;D :D ::)

Thanks for the link ; those do not make it to Europe because we got an underground factory of smallest coins of the world which are 0.5 grams gold content unknown

I think if you sneeze this medal would flutter away if it was not plasticised in board

On the other hand I used to apply " sturmgold" to my silk paintings . Gold is the only material that can be made in a monomolecular layer . 10 sheets of gold 24 carat 4 x 4 inch were like 2.5 dollars . You apply with some adhesive and it looks like a lick of goldpaint . You cannot dry clean cause the gold all 0.25 cent of it will be gone .
On the other hand for that price I have been known to reapply the gold .

A density measurement would be needed to determine but at 8 carat and the clasp 14 carat and the ruby and the diamonds that is not practical .

If with a 10x led loupe in hand you cannot see the cleaning then it is not cleaned or retraining is needed

A few months ago I bought two lucky angels off ebay france and both were cleaned and I complained
I got as an answer from the vendor HE did not clean them ; so it was not HIS fault
I gave two negative feedbacks and he considered that VERY HARSH treatment :o

Everybody is out their to grab your money ???

Through trial and error me and my coindealing friend established that FDC ( fleur de coin)
should be MS65 if the vendor is honest . BU however is allover the place from MS60 to MS64 I have the impression. So I am amazed NGC got away with a BU which means zip apart that it hopefully is uncirculated

This is one of the first time in 7 years that I see the grade MS61 handed out so many times
Normally it is MS60 for a really scarred bagmarked coin or MS62 for a somewhat better
specimen
Here those MS61 look better (if they are really MS because coins that old really retone)
On the other hand the AU coins look way overgraded . The AU55 is low XF in my opinion

The guy who taught me everything I knew about grading was first a professional fotoshopper and then a coindealer until his wife left him
He did estate purchases and retail sales
When you submit your coins ten at the time every week you tend to be known as
somebody who needs to be satisfied or he goes to the competition
The most honest seems to be NGC , when they make a mistake it is because they got
a new grader or somebody who had a very nice night behind him .

Here is a guy who says 4 times he only sells the box and gets 265 euro ::)
