Contest AGK
August 15, 2009, 11:51:41 PM
Contest to help the 2009 medal drive
Winners a knight and a knightess each 50 US$ paypalled directly to Merlins account for any 2009 medal directly or indirectly
If not two winners Merlin gets the money to his name

The contest will be somewhat different from last year
There will be hints and anybody giving a correct answer will get an extra "vote"
I have a list of right answers and those jumping several "answers" will get that many extra votes
The final will be like choosing between six to eight coins and the winners of all in between answers will have six or more extra votes so that they are probably in the tiebreaker
The last week any registered knight however can choose any of the six to eight coins and have about 16.66 % chance of being right and end in the tiebreaker

I will make the right answer known at the end of each period
I hope we will have fun like last year
AGK alias Paint your Wagon and come along since I was born under a wondering star

The first clue is Sophia Loren First clueword is FILM
The second clue is This is my quest Second clueword SONG
Extra votes for final round
Nevol 9 total 10
Longnine009  2 total 3

Selections made by members ; number of the coin shown

2  Templar; AdamL, Nevol

Italian?

The answer is correct but does not figure on my list since it does not advance us any further towards the mystery coin which is not Italian.
Brigitte Bardot and Gina Lolobrigida and Sophia Loren were my "sweathearts " when I was a teenager  ;D
This is a further hint and you may try again  ;)

Hollywood 'Sex' Sirens

I do not think that anybody here would link them to Hollywood . They were the European Diva's of the sixties . I am told Halle Bery is in vogue now .As teenager we had a joke that if you put a picture of Gina Lolobrigida in your schoolbook you would not be able to close it ( The boobs woulds stick out too far )
Anyway I still have the picture of Gigliola Cinquetti in my dictionary . She won the European songcontest
when I was like 18 ( a lifetime ago )

You have to look at the hints as stepping stones to the coin , and allthough Sophia Loren was very sexy ; like in the film the Cassandra Crossing ; the sexy part is not the hint . Since this seems a lot more difficult then I had ever anticipated you can try again .

I used the word in one of my second or third explanations

It is like the pshycology test were the psychiatrist says a word and you have to answer the first thing that comes to your mind
Italian is correct but does not help
Female actor is correct but too vague
Sexy is correct but does not lead to the coin
Star is correct but that could refer to a singer

I will give Nevol an extra vote for the final round for being close . Only she can get 2 extra votes for being right if she tries again .
The others can still get one extra vote for being right

I will keep the tally in the first post of this thread

Where I am going I don't know
All I know is that I'am on my way

Would this have something to do with it?

"This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live"

Impossible dream
Movies by Sophia Fall of the Roman Empire and El Cid.

The right answer was that it are the lyrics of a song the impossible dream

So song is the right answer and since in the rest you jumped one step you get two points

However my reference has a different text to the song

...he can not sing

you get a point for this (correct) answer but he did "sing" that song and the stand in selected by him
sang so "badly" in the same voice as Peter's that an uninformed critic said Peter's voice is atrocious but it was not his own voice but the standin's voice ( voiceover I guess you call it )
So you may try again for another point

Like I said before Longnine allready gave the correct answer buried somewhere in his post ; that is why he got two points : but he may not know the right answer he gave to this  :D

In the film Peter O' Toole plays three different persons
Don Quichote : Knight of the Woefull Countenance
Don Quijana ( nobleman who in his "delirium" becomes Don Quichote )
and Don ... who has to appear before the inquisition in the film ( in real life he was in prison )

I just finished photoshopping all the scans eliminating rainbow color and sizing them down from the 1000 pixel png at 400 dpi to what the net will accept being a mere 72 dpi jpg
I ended up with 7 possibilities
Since Nevol has seven points she is in the tiebreak automatically .
However Nevol is allowed to acquire more points and to give them to the Knight of her choice but read the tiebreaker rule
Every registered knight will be allowed to choose once and when correct to choose once in the tiebreaker
Longnine and Nevol will be allowed as many extra choices as they have points and also as many extra choices in the tiebreaker
( only Nevol is shure to be in the tiebreaker with 7 choices )

Correct again but you are still leaving a point on the table for the 10 euro commems
So I will add another point to your counter

It may be semantics but I agree with the article saying that Don Quijana only became Don Quichote after reading all those books about Knight Errands . I read the complete translated works because the ancient spanish was more then I could handle allthough I have a spanish complete version . Also after a while in the book he takes the name of knight of the Woefull Countenance.

The first part starts :
En un lugar de la Mancha, de cujo nombre no quiero accordarme,no ha mucho tiempo que viva un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adigua antigua, rocin flaco y galgo corredor.

Loosely translated : In a part of la Mancha , which name I do not want to remember, not long ago lived an hidalgo = spanish gentry ,of the kind that has a lance against the wall in a rack and an old harnass and an old horse ( and hunting dog )

Before he became "mad" this man was Don Quijana the landed gentry who became Don Quichote when he took horse , lance and harmor and with Don Pancho on his mule rode to battle .

Well...I could use all my votes & scoop the pool, but I've decided to wait & let some other Knights/Knightesses have a go.

In fact if any other Knights/Knightess would like an "'extra" vote, I'm prepared to allocate some of my votes.  All they have to do is request an extra vote here in this thread and it shall be done. If I have any 'spare' votes left by next Friday night, I'll use them all, so get your request in quick! One vote allocated per Knights/Knightess.

I'm not exactly sure what you're wanting in an answer. Are you asking for your favorite reverse of the group, and your favorite obverse of the group from seperate coins? Or is one coin the answer to both? Or is that something we're supposed to figure out ourselves?

Sorry if I was not clear
Select the design I like best
Everyone can select any number so number 1 is not "taken"
That is the reason for the tiebreaker
If there are 10 knights selecting number 1 the tiebreaker decides the winner ( that is if 1 is my choice)
I will try to keep accounting track in the first post of this thread

(note to Nevol ; you can select 1 to 7 and give away three votes but that will leave you with only 7 votes in the tiebreaker instead of 10 votes in the tiebreaker)

Well I sure as hell spent 4 hours on writing the scenario and you at least participated even if you were confused .
Is that picture from El Cid ? I have that film but I have not had time yet to view it again . I also have like 100 softcovers I have not read yet . I just finished yesterday Foucaults Pendulum by Umberto Eco (an Italian professor ) He is not kind towards the Templars in the book . Enlightening because I knew the Rosecrusians but not the Rose Croix nor the Baconists but yes the Templars and the Teutonic knights and the Masons and the Druids and the Jesuits etc

Yes Umberto Eco wrote the Name of the Rose ( which is just a little bit less difficult to read then the Pendulum )
This was an aside ; somebody thought I was drinking but I was reading this Pendulum book .
