Contest to help the 2009 medal drive
Winners a knight and a knightess each 50 US$ paypalled directly to Merlins account for any 2009 medal directly or indirectly
If not two winners Merlin gets the money to his name
The contest will be somewhat different from last year
There will be hints and anybody giving a correct answer will get an extra "vote"
I have a list of right answers and those jumping several "answers" will get that many extra votes
The final will be like choosing between six to eight coins and the winners of all in between answers will have six or more extra votes so that they are probably in the tiebreaker
The last week any registered knight however can choose any of the six to eight coins and have about 16.66 % chance of being right and end in the tiebreaker
I will make the right answer known at the end of each period
I hope we will have fun like last year
AGK alias Paint your Wagon and come along since I was born under a wondering star
The first clue is Sophia Loren First clueword is FILM
The second clue is This is my quest Second clueword SONG

-
Italian?
The answer is correct but does not figure on my list since it does not advance us any further towards the mystery coin which is not Italian.
Brigitte Bardot and Gina Lolobrigida and Sophia Loren were my "sweathearts " when I was a teenager ;D
This is a further hint and you may try again ;)
-
United Future World Currency prototype coin
(http://news4themasses.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/united-future-world-currency-coin.jpg?w=225&h=225)
That is the coin the Russian had to show on the last Euro conference in Italy

Hollywood 'Sex' Sirens
-
Hollywood 'Sex' Sirens
I do not think that anybody here would link them to Hollywood . They were the European Diva's of the sixties . I am told Halle Bery is in vogue now .As teenager we had a joke that if you put a picture of Gina Lolobrigida in your schoolbook you would not be able to close it ( The boobs woulds stick out too far )
Anyway I still have the picture of Gigliola Cinquetti in my dictionary . She won the European songcontest
when I was like 18 ( a lifetime ago )
You have to look at the hints as stepping stones to the coin , and allthough Sophia Loren was very sexy ; like in the film the Cassandra Crossing ; the sexy part is not the hint . Since this seems a lot more difficult then I had ever anticipated you can try again .

The answer is really KISS
Keep it Stupid Simple
-
The answer is really KISS
Keep it Stupid Simple
Don't you mean "Keep it simple, stupid"? ;D
They are all European female actors. ::)
-
Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades my most likeable american boss used to say
Come to think of it I only ever had one good boss amongst like 25 vultures and XXXX
The magic answer was verbatum in one of my ramblings posted here . It is one word
-
Well it is 12 midnight so I have to go and do what I do at midnight 8)
-
"sweethearts"
Actually, I think the answer is Star.
-
MAYBY THEY ALL WORKED TO PREVENT THE DESTRUCTION OF ANIMALS FOR COATS ETC.---"SPIES"-----OR "TEESHIRTS"
THE ONE WORD ANSWER REALLY THROWS ME---YOUR SERVANT--THE TEMPLAR(http://)
-
"sweethearts"
Actually, I think the answer is Star.
Sweetharts was what I was about to say, although I am a little confused at the moment.
-
although I am a little confused at the moment.
Glad to hear someone say that, because I'm TOTALLY confused!
-
I used the word in one of my second or third explanations
It is like the pshycology test were the psychiatrist says a word and you have to answer the first thing that comes to your mind
Italian is correct but does not help
Female actor is correct but too vague
Sexy is correct but does not lead to the coin
Star is correct but that could refer to a singer
I will give Nevol an extra vote for the final round for being close . Only she can get 2 extra votes for being right if she tries again .
The others can still get one extra vote for being right
I will keep the tally in the first post of this thread
-
Remember the word is Sophia Loren
What is your association with the word ?
When you see the answer you are going to say duh that simple
-
AGELESS!
TEMPLAR?
-
AGELESS!
TEMPLAR?
Unfortunately Loren in 2009 does not look ageless
And by the by the answer I am seeking was in half the titles turned up by my webcrawler

'teenager' ?
Can we just keep guessing?
-
I'm certain I've got it this time! ;D
film
-
Beautiful?
-
I'm certain I've got it this time! ;D
film
YES you got it
Gosh that was a difficult associative process
Half of the webcrawler titles had the word filmstar
The word is FILM
So Nevol got marked down for two extra guesses in the final
Now was the word not KISS ? ( I would have accepted Filmstar as a one pointer )
-
The second clue may probably best be viewed independantly from the first because only a few people would see
the assosiation at this point . Again the answer is one word
Second clue ; this is not MY quest This is my quest
-
Would this have something to do with it?
"This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live"
Impossible dream
Movies by Sophia Fall of the Roman Empire and El Cid.

The right answer was that it are the lyrics of a song the impossible dream
So song is the right answer and since in the rest you jumped one step you get two points
However my reference has a different text to the song
http://lyrics.doheth.co.uk/songs/elvis-presley/live-at-madison-square-garden/impossible-dream-the-quest.php
-
Third clue Peter O' Toole
And to give the people around the globe that are now sleeping a chance I will try and not answer before
24 hrs have lapsed
-
By the by
El Cid was a mighty knightfilm but I still like her better in the Cassandra Crossing when she was like 42 years old .
-
IT IS REALLY TOUGH TO ANSWER IN ONE WORD----LIKE ELIZABETH TAYLOR--THEY DEFY DISCRIPTION!--I KNOW THAT THIS WILL BE HOTLY ARGUED BUT AS A HOPELESS ROMANTIC, I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH THEM SJNCE I FIRST SAW THEM!
YOUR STAR STRUCK SERVANT--THE TEMPLAR(http://)
-
Lawrence (of Arabia)

YOUR STAR STRUCK SERVANT--THE TEMPLAR(http://)
My one word would be Marc Anthony or Cleopatr
And after 38 years of marriage I am a hopeless romantic too
-
Lawrence (of Arabia)
Nope
-
A little hint
Several possible rigth answers of two to four words
Third clue Peter O' Toole he may know the lyrics but ....
-
...he can not sing
-
...he can not sing
you get a point for this (correct) answer but he did "sing" that song and the stand in selected by him
sang so "badly" in the same voice as Peter's that an uninformed critic said Peter's voice is atrocious but it was not his own voice but the standin's voice ( voiceover I guess you call it )
So you may try again for another point
Like I said before Longnine allready gave the correct answer buried somewhere in his post ; that is why he got two points : but he may not know the right answer he gave to this :D
-
Third clue Peter O' Toole he may know the lyrics but ... .
Emphasis on the word know
-
The Big Picture?
-
The Big Picture?
In your previous post you used the exact words I am looking for
If you know the lyrics what may escape you ?
-
Heavenly cause?
No, I take that back nothing "heavenly" about Peter O'Toole.
It's "to follow that star"
-
The Big Picture?
In your previous post you used the exact words I am looking for
If you know the lyrics what may escape you ?
-
"This is my quest" ?
As in Quest Knight? 8)
-
Impossible Dream... ?
-
Impossible Dream... ?
Of course you are right
Only the Title or the singer could fail to come to memory even if you know the whole text
Ah another point to you
-
Fourth clue
Sofia Loren
Peter O'Toole
The impossible dream
Peter sings the song to Sofia .....
-
Man of La Mancha
-
Man of La Mancha
Of course
Failed musical film that got rehabilitated later . Sofia sang herself as Aldonza=Dulcinea ; she did not want a stand in
There goes another point to you
-
Fifth clue
In the film he is called to appear before the inquisition
His name is called by the guards as Don ......
Beware because the film has a strange circle in circle in circle structure .....
-
Don Quixote, or
Don Quijote de la Mancha
-
Don Quixote, or
Don Quijote de la Mancha
No
In the film Peter O' Toole plays three different persons
Don Quichote : Knight of the Woefull Countenance
Don Quijana ( nobleman who in his "delirium" becomes Don Quichote )
and Don ... who has to appear before the inquisition in the film ( in real life he was in prison )
( but because Don Quichote is on my list you get a point all the same )
-
Miguel de Cervantes
-
Miguel de Cervantes
Of course Don Miguel de Cervantes
Who was in the war and lost the use of an arm
Who was a gally slave and in prison
Whose second part of the book was claimed by an imposter
The favourate of all Knights Errand
Another point and a final trivial clue tomorrow before I show the coins

This is the link to the play

Last clue or should I say opportunity to win point(s)
Of those personnas discussed in this thread who ended up on one or multiple Euro coins ?
-
I just finished photoshopping all the scans eliminating rainbow color and sizing them down from the 1000 pixel png at 400 dpi to what the net will accept being a mere 72 dpi jpg
I ended up with 7 possibilities
Since Nevol has seven points she is in the tiebreak automatically .
However Nevol is allowed to acquire more points and to give them to the Knight of her choice but read the tiebreaker rule
Every registered knight will be allowed to choose once and when correct to choose once in the tiebreaker
Longnine and Nevol will be allowed as many extra choices as they have points and also as many extra choices in the tiebreaker
( only Nevol is shure to be in the tiebreaker with 7 choices )
-
ATTENTION YOU LURKERS .
IF YOU SUBMIT FOR REGISTRATION AND MERLIN AND HIS WISE MAN ACCEPT YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE CONTEST

Miguel de Cervantes is on the Obverse of the 50 Euro Cents, 20 Euro Cents and 10 Euro Cents coins of Spain.

You get one point for a correct answer
-
The 2 euro coin
Does'nt he look woefull ?
And remark he is wearing the shaving basin on his head as helmet
-
Nevol and all
You can still get a few points by providing the missing answers

Nevol and Longnine009 had all the answers sofar
The hints-questions or associations like you could call them were in red text throughout the contest
I am sorry it moved too fast but confusion is the name of the game of any "puzzle" like game
Try playing the computer gamepuzzle MIST it drives you crazy
The last question was
Don Quichote
Don Miguel de Cervantes
Don Quijana
which of the three was on a legal tender coin
-

Correct again but you are still leaving a point on the table for the 10 euro commems
So I will add another point to your counter
You got 9 extra votes now for 7 coins and for the tiebreaker : congrats. :)
Renal was missing in action on the knight side I guess :-X
-
I will try to post the 7 coins saturday and leave them on for 7 days till the next saturday at 12 midnight greenwich time
Every knight can make a guess
Since the guess does not reveal anything they can be posted in this thread so I can keep track more easily

It may be semantics but I agree with the article saying that Don Quijana only became Don Quichote after reading all those books about Knight Errands . I read the complete translated works because the ancient spanish was more then I could handle allthough I have a spanish complete version . Also after a while in the book he takes the name of knight of the Woefull Countenance.
The first part starts :
En un lugar de la Mancha, de cujo nombre no quiero accordarme,no ha mucho tiempo que viva un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adigua antigua, rocin flaco y galgo corredor.
Loosely translated : In a part of la Mancha , which name I do not want to remember, not long ago lived an hidalgo = spanish gentry ,of the kind that has a lance against the wall in a rack and an old harnass and an old horse ( and hunting dog )
Before he became "mad" this man was Don Quijana the landed gentry who became Don Quichote when he took horse , lance and harmor and with Don Pancho on his mule rode to battle .
-
Now on to the coins
The question is simple
Which design obverse or reverse do I like best
Simply give the number as answer ( 1 to 7 )
All can participate with one single answer
Longnine can give 3 answers and Nevol 10
We close next saturday midnight London time
The answers can be posted here and I will try to keep a running account up to date

Nobody wants to be first to venture a guess ? >:(
-
Well...I could use all my votes & scoop the pool, but I've decided to wait & let some other Knights/Knightesses have a go.
In fact if any other Knights/Knightess would like an "'extra" vote, I'm prepared to allocate some of my votes. All they have to do is request an extra vote here in this thread and it shall be done. If I have any 'spare' votes left by next Friday night, I'll use them all, so get your request in quick! One vote allocated per Knights/Knightess.
-
OK I'll go first.

I'm not exactly sure what you're wanting in an answer. Are you asking for your favorite reverse of the group, and your favorite obverse of the group from seperate coins? Or is one coin the answer to both? Or is that something we're supposed to figure out ourselves?

Scroll down Adam, PYW has supplied 7 images to choose from, some MAY be Obv, some MAY be Rev, that part's not really inportant. Numbered 1 - 7, but 1 is already taken by Triggersmob. Have a look at 2 - 6, see if you can guess which one PYW likes best. ;D

Sorry if I was not clear
Select the design I like best
Everyone can select any number so number 1 is not "taken"
That is the reason for the tiebreaker
If there are 10 knights selecting number 1 the tiebreaker decides the winner ( that is if 1 is my choice)
I will try to keep accounting track in the first post of this thread
(note to Nevol ; you can select 1 to 7 and give away three votes but that will leave you with only 7 votes in the tiebreaker instead of 10 votes in the tiebreaker)

OK, I also misunderstood, so basically, if I don't use 7 of my 10 votes myself, they'll be wasted?
So far it appears that nobody else wants any extra votes, but for anyone who is interested, speak up!
-
OK, I also misunderstood, so basically, if I don't use 7 of my 10 votes myself, they'll be wasted?
They would be wasted ; but I decided if you did not succeed in giving any way I would put you down for votes 1 to 7 automatically

My guess is also #2. It just stood out to me for some reason.

I pick #1 #4 and #5.

Well I sure as hell spent 4 hours on writing the scenario and you at least participated even if you were confused .
Is that picture from El Cid ? I have that film but I have not had time yet to view it again . I also have like 100 softcovers I have not read yet . I just finished yesterday Foucaults Pendulum by Umberto Eco (an Italian professor ) He is not kind towards the Templars in the book . Enlightening because I knew the Rosecrusians but not the Rose Croix nor the Baconists but yes the Templars and the Teutonic knights and the Masons and the Druids and the Jesuits etc
-
I posted this pic in the past
It is the reverse of the gold coin
nr 5 in silver that wins
You have to love Don Quijana with his spindly legs reading that huge book on knighs errand
That means congratulations to Nevol and Longnine009 each win US50$ which are paypalled directly to Merlin
to be used for any medals of 2009
Thank you all 4 that participated in the contest final

Yes Umberto Eco wrote the Name of the Rose ( which is just a little bit less difficult to read then the Pendulum )
This was an aside ; somebody thought I was drinking but I was reading this Pendulum book .

Terry let me know if they deduct anything because now the option is showing for the sender to pay all costs and have a net transfer
I paid like close to five dollars to make it a net transfer of 100

Thanks very much to PYW for the contest & the great prize. Having the contest end on my Birthday must have been a bit of an omen. ::)
I'm a bit puzzled why not many people entered though. ??? ???
