OK this is a contest for those of you who like to get your brain's gray matter fired up. Its based on a question from an IQ test that I sat way back in my youth. Back then, I spent quite a bit of time working out the answer. Lets hope I was correct.
The question:
The Knights of the Coin Table have manufactured coins in eight integral demoninations, from 1 wooden dollar to 300 wooden dollars. The ratios between adjacent denominations are either 2, 2½ or 3. To purchase a 69 wooden dollar souvenir, a tourist gives the seller one coin and receives one coin in exchange.
To win you need to supply me with the value of the single coin that the tourist paid with and the value of the single coin that the seller gave the tourist as change. Also, so that I know you are not just guessing, you need to supply the denominations of all eight coins. (They should, of course, contain the two denominations that you have quoted in your answer)
I'll let this run for a while to see if anyone can come up with a correct answer. If not, I'll give a hint. To my knowledge, there are three possible combinations that the eight denominations can be. But all three possibilities contain the two demoninations exchanged in the purchase.
The Rules:
This contest is open to everyone irrespective of the number of posts you have made in our forum.
First person to post a correct answer wins.
You can post an answer as many times as you like but only once in a 24 hour period.
My decision is final.
I reserve the right to change the rules if need be.
The Prize:
An Aussie year 2000 Millenniun 50c coin with the incused flag variation posted to anywhere in the world.

What does it mean by purchase a 69 wooden dollar? Is that the same as paying 69 dollars? :)

Justa, It says a 69 wooden dollar souvenir. That is, a souvenir that costs 69 wooden dollars. Think of the "wooden dollar" as a unit of currency. Like the "pound" or "yen" or "dollar". It is not a year.

I'm guessing that the denominations are also whole numbers? Like 2, etc? Not 2.6666? :)

Ok think I have got it....
Numbers are: 1, 2, 6, 15, 30, 75, 150, 300
Ratios are 2: 3: 2.5: 2: 2.5: 2: 2
So the guy must have paid 75 wooden dollars and received 6 wooden dollars back.. :)

Hey thats more than 3 combinations :) Moral of the story is that 75 and 6 must be there :)

I hadn't even reached for my pencil before Justa had it figured out. I have to confess that nearly all my maths knowledge has left forever. ???
The only thing that has stuck is the Theorem of Pythagoras (text) not the actual theorem. I wouldn't have the foggiest on how to actually apply it. :P
Seeing as how I left school in 1960, it's probably no surprise. ;)
