In the spirit of giving, since it is my birthday, I am holding a contest.
Not much thought has gone into this at all :) I haven't even picked a prize yet, but it will be something nice.
The rules are:
1. Contest will end 6.00pm Australian time, about 7.00am forum time I think, on the 10th October.
2. Only one guess per person per day
3. In the event no one guesses correctly, the guess I think is best will win.
4. If someone guesses correctly before the 10th, the contest will continue with new prizes and a new question (I am feeling generous today) :)
UPDATED RULES: My party, I can change the rules right?
5. As my questions seem too easy :) I have decided not to post the prizes untill the end, just in case there are 20 winners with the way my questions are being answered. So all prizes will be posted after the contest has ended and winners will be able to chose their prize in the order they were won.
6. If you have won a prize, you may not enter again unless a question lasts longer than 2 days.
I will post a hint each day to help.
OK, the questions are:
1. Where does my nickname latman come from? Won by KurtS
2. Coin collecting and weight training are two of my passions. There is one more thing I do that I am as equally passionate about. What is it? Won by justabeginner
3. I am married with two children, I celebrated my wedding anniversary on the 30th September. How many years have I been married? Justa wins again and can't enter again.
4. How would you describe your experience here at the Castle, and what does it mean to you? Won by Tobyle.
5. I started to get serious about collecting in 1986 at age 16, and actually bought my first coin. It was an Australian pre decimal. What was it? Won by Kurt again.
6. If there were 25 crows on a fence and somone shot 9/17ths of 11/15ths of the 1/2 on the left with a shotgun, how many crows would be left? Winners Tobyle, triggersmob and ElleKitty. And a consolation prize to AdamL for realising that it is better to drink ale than try and figure out a trick question.
Prizes are up sort of. Please see new post.
-
Because you were born in Latvia!
:) :) :) :)
-
Happy birthday Sean! :)
My guess for "lat" is you do bodybuilding and it relates to exercises for Latissimus Dorsi "lat" muscles.
-
A child's version of Batman. Can't pronounce the B & gets L instead. :P
-
Well that lasted a long time 8)
Kurt is so close I have to declare him a winner here. I did say not much thought went into this contest. :)
Before I began my construction company, I was a gym instructor and bodybuilder. Weight training is still one of my great loves. My nickname latman came from me being able to outlift in the deadlift (a back or latiissimus dorsi exercise) guys much bigger than me, hence The Latman.
Ok next question, for the next prize.
2. Coin collecting and weight training are two of my passions. There is one more thing I do that I am as equally passionate about. What is it?
This will be harder as I have never mentioned it on the forums before.
I will post pics of the prizes tomorrow, as the batteries in my camera are flat.
-
Racing Cars?
-
Charity work?
regards,
-
Females!
-
Investing in property? :)
-
Cool! ;D Thanks for the contest!
I'll admit I had a few clues--one came with our last trade. :)
I've also done a bit of weight lifting myself.
-
Beer?
-
Metal Detecting
-
Your Family :)
-
Testing top-secret aircraft? Crocheting? Part-time Superhero ? Selling Avon to earn a few extra bucks to buy more coins? ;D
-
These are some good answers and Nighthawk I am still laughing :D
Time for a clue.
-
Why need a clue when you play the guitar? :)
-
How the #@%$ did you know that! Was that a guess, or are you stalking me justa? I didn't think I had ever mentioned it on any of the forums. Now I have to think of a new question ???
Justa is right, I have played the guitar for 25 years now, and I have a collection of 7 of them. I used to be in a band called Plinky that spent more time AT gigs, then playing them, but it was fun.
-
A simple google on 'latman100' brought this up :)
Hi to all. Please excuse my ignorance on just about everyting to do
with computers and gadgets. I am a guitar player who has no knowledge
at all of computer recording and have been told that these zoom
digital recorders are pretty much a complete DIY recording studio. I
am thinking of buying one. Can anyone give me some advice, I
understand I don't need to connect these to a computer at all if I
choose not to. Is this correct? Thanks
Yes I googled you :)
-
Wow, you ARE stalking me. Damn forums, too much info for their own good. >:(
-
OK, forgot to put the new question in a seperate post.
Question 3.
I am married with two children, I celebrated my wedding anniversary on the 30th September. How many years have I been married?
-

-
I'll guess 5 :)

regards,
-
12 Years! ;D
-

-
8
-
Too long............how about 15 years
-
Three months.
-
Ok, time for a clue. It is more than Gooses guess and less than humbybongs.
-
Three years!
-
EEk I think Adam is right..... :) But I'll guess two years then :)
-
One year.
-
Justa wins again. You can't enter again, ;D new rule
Will post a new question soon as I can think of one.
-
Ok, not a right answer this time, but a best answer. This will run for two days, then one final question to finish the contest.
How would you describe your experience here at the Castle, and what does it mean to you?
-
:( Looks like I'm out.... I know you'll miss me guys :D
-

-
Well done Tobyle, I think that says it all. I'm not even going to try and compete with that.
-
Me either! If it was up to me, Tobyle would be the winner!
-
Tobyle, I really think that will be tough to beat. In fact, that is really, really good. Maybe someone (admin/moderators) could copy that and put it somewhere where all the members could see it?
Ok, in keeping with my changing the rules whenever I feel like it, Tobyle wins this round. :)
Next question. (only two days left, I promise)
5. I started to get serious about collecting in 1986 at age 16, and actually bought my first coin. It was an Australian pre decimal. What was it?
-
Gee, Latman, thanks! Wanted to try making it rhyme ..... but, after working all night, hmmmm.... had to settle on it as it is!
re your first predecimal coin ....... a 1930 unc penny! No, just joking ......
My guess: a 34/35 Melbourne Centenary florin
-
Tobyle, that's a great contribution. :)
5. I started to get serious about collecting in 1986 at age 16, and actually bought my first coin. It was an Australian pre decimal. What was it?
I might have "insider knowledge", but I'll take a shot: A George V Shilling. If I were to guess a year, then 1914.
-
1927 Canberra Florin. ::) ::)
-
Am I still outta this? :D
-
How many times do you want to win Justa :)
You can guess again 8)
-
Haha.. Nah I'll leave it to someone else :D
-
1923 Halfpenny
-
1911 Half Penny?
-
Clue, it was only minted for 2 years.
-
A George VI Crown? (1937-38)
-
That should be it :D
-
Guess I am going to save on postage with this competition. You are right again Kurt. First coin I ever bought was a 1937 crown.
I think you and Justa spend way too much time here :)
In fairness to everyone else, you and Justa can't enter again sorry. But there will be more competitions soon. ;)
Ok, last question.
6. If there were 25 crows on a fence and somone shot 9/17ths of 11/15ths of the 1/2 on the left with a shotgun, how many crows would be left?
-
In fairness to everyone else, you and Justa can't enter again sorry.
Fine by me, and I feel inclined to share my prize with another collector. :) I just dropped by and lucked out..it's not the prize as much as the challenge. ;D
-
Is this a trick question? :O
-

6. If there were 25 crows on a fence and somone shot 9/17ths of 11/15ths of the 1/2 on the left with a shotgun, how many crows would be left?
I've had enough mugs of ale that I won't even think about that question tonight ;D
-
None ...... the others would have flown away
(if they had any sense!)
-
If you shot the half on the left, then there would be none left, they would all be right.
Or the other possibility is, you can't have half of 25.
-
Or .... they are still all there, but some would be dead!
Ooops ..... that was my second guess, so it doesn't count!
-
There would be none left. A shotgun would have got them all. ^^
-
5 hours left. A little hint, if you answer this question, you are probably going to win something :)
-
Contest is now closed. Thanks all for playing. Next time I will be more organised. Maybe. :)
Winners of question 6:
Tobyle, triggersmob and ElleKitty. And a consolation prize to AdamL for realising that it is better to drink ale than try and figure out a trick question.
And thank you to all for not actually giving me a number, as I hadn't bothered to figure out an answer. ::)
I will post the prizes a little later tonight, still having camera problems.
-
Ok winners we have a small problem. My camera is not working, so I will list the prizes here and get pics up Sunday Australia time. Winners may choose their prize in the order they won as per the list below. KurtS has given pick 5 to CoinCrusader in his competition, so either he will choose or Kurt will choose for him (they can work it out :)). Winners can pick now, or wait till the pictures are up. Obviously if the person above you wants to wait for pictures, then you have to wait too :P
There are more prizes than winners, as I don't want anyone to feel like they are getting bottom of the barrel.
AdamL, as consolation prize winner, gets to choose from what is left.
Winners in order are:
1. KurtS
2. Justabeginner
3. Justabeginner
4. Tobyle
5. KurtS (CoinCrusader)
6. Tobyle
7. Triggersmob
8. ElleKitty
9. AdamL
Could everyone except, Kurt, Justa and Miss Kitty please PM me their address.

Thanks for the contest, Latman.
I wasn't expecting to win anything, what a surprise.
PM sent.
-
Ooh, thank you Sean! I wasn't planning on winning anything either, but this is a nice surprise!
I'm way down low on the pick order, but the 20 cent coin pair seems most tempting to me. :D
-
Thank you very much latman ;D ;D ;D
I'll wait and see what is left by the time its my turn :)
-
Thanks again Sean for the contest! ;D
I'll start things off with my selection:
1. 1913 B Indian Rupee gVf

I'll go for Number 2 and number 8 :)

-
I'll go for number 6 - the surprise pack ..... and 7 please.
Thanks again Latman!
-
Tobyle I thought we were only meant to pick one :O
-
Tobyle's pick of two works because Coincrusader's first choice is #9. :)
-
OOh.... I get it now... Toblye won twice too :D Sorry my eyes must have been malfunctioning. :D
-
So Triggersmob and Ellekitty still need to select before me, right?
-
Thats right, but as I am still feeling generous, if you are looking for anything in particular, feel free to ask. If I can help, I will.
-
AdamL, I'll settle on number 6 for the moment and you can take my 2nd pick spot- so if you would like the 66 50 cent, go ahead.
-
If CC42's preference is #9, then I will take #10, I like bi-metallics.
Thank you Latman.
-
Yay! That leaves # 12 for me. ;D
Large head 2004 20 cent!
-
AdamL, I'll settle on number 6 for the moment and you can take my 2nd pick spot- so if you would like the 66 50 cent, go ahead.
Thanks for the offer, but you can keep you picks. #5 sounds good to me.
-
By the way, Latman I hope you enjoyed you Birthday....... I certainly did! Thanks!
-
Thanks Tobyle. I had one of the best I have ever had. And all of you made it even better.
Can everyone who hasn't sent me their address please do so. And if anyone wants pics to see what they are getting please let me know and I will get them up. I have my brothers camera here now.
-
Will send PM with address in a few minutes.
No pic required for me ....... I'll wait to see what the 'surprise' is.
-
Great contest latman. And very generous of you to allow so many winners :)
Thanks.
PM with address coming in a few minutes...
-
Sorry to everyone who won but I have had a bit of a busy week. Everyones package except Justa and Miss Kitty will be sent today. Justa and Miss Kitty, the notes I am sending you are in my deposit box at the bank, which is proving difficult to get to this week. I have made other arrangements to get the same notes for you, so if they arrive before I can get to the bank, I will send them. But it looks like next week at this stage.
Many apologies to all and next time I promise to be more organised with my competitions.
-
Thanks again for the fun contest and being so generous on your birthday! ;D
-
Sean, I am in no hurry whatsoever. You are offering these prizes and this note out of the goodness of your own heart, and so I can wait patiently until you have time to do whatever you need to do.
No apologies necessary! Wasn't it Australia who coined the phrase "No worries?" ;)
And definitely, thank you! I wasn't expecting to win a prize at all. :)
-
Its all good Sean... Take your time. I'm in no hurry whatsoever.. And thanks for the contest again and the note too.. It was AWESOME! :D
-
Justabeginner, would you please PM me your address.
regards, Muckeye.
-
Wasn't it Australia who coined the phrase "No worries?"

-
Miss Kitty and Justa, your prizes will be in the mail tomorrow. ;)
-
Cool! :) Thanks again Sean..
-
;D I'm excited to see them.
-
Just arrived home to find my 'surprise pack' of coins .......... and yes, it was a very nice surprise. Thanks Sean - I'm overwhelmed! I received a mixture of Aussie coins, including a 2006 $1 with a strike through error like I've never seen before, and a 1972 50 cent, and some coins to add to my world collection including a 1923 Canadian 5 cent, a bimetallic thailand coin ..... and others. Still going through them!
Thanks again Sean!
-
I. to, have received my prize today.
A beautiful, uncirculated 1994 $5 bi-metallic coin from Aus.
I haven't seen one of these before.
Thank you, Sean and thanks again for running the contest.
-
I received the coins today. Thanks Sean for the great contest.
Beautiful Rupee--I'll post a pic later, and send off the prize for CC. :)
-
Glad you all liked them :)
-
My Aussie 50 cent pieces arrived today, all 10 of them :)
They're great! Thank you very much Sean!
-
My packet arrived on Friday or Saturday, I believe, with my two twenty cent coins and the lovely note as well. That note still makes my jaw hit the floor, it's so beautiful. I owe you more than thanks, latman!
-
Miss Kitty, you have just made me a very happy man. I was starting to get worried it wasn't going to make it. Glad you like them.
-
Sean, thanks again--the 1913 Rupee is very nice. :)

-
Glad you like it Kurt :)
I love these coins. The George V crowned portrait is one of my favourite obverses, and I love the contrasting asian feel of the reverse.
In case you are unaware, you determine the mint for these by the space under the lotus flower at the bottom. A bead means it is from the Bombay mint, as this one is. If there is none, it is from Calcutta.
I remember it as beady Bombay and clear Calcutta. ;D
-
beady Bombay and clear Calcutta
I'll remember that! ;D
This coin is also a good reminder of that obverse design variety for the 1916 1/2d :D
--such an optimist.
