I agree with many of the above, but a sleeper, somewhat western, was 'Bad Day at Black Rock'. It had many stars....Spencer Tracy, Anne Francis, Lee Marvin, Walter Brennan and many others. I've watched it many times.

I can't even think of 5 at the moment, but I know my favourite is Paint Your Wagon.

It was the first movie I saw at a drive-in theatre, just after coming to Australia.

I love westerns and sci fi and musicals and action movies

Westerns

The good the bad and the ugly
High Noon ( first film ever to run synchronous with real world time 90 minutes in the film were 90 minutes in real live )
Paint your wagon
The Alamo ( with John Wayne because of the allnight music that plaid the last night - Toque de deguelho )
Cat Ballou ( with Lee Marvin )
Red Sun ( because of Ursula Andress)
Calamity Jane

I know that are 7  ::)
They all have beautifull music too ( except perhaps Red Sun )

I like alot of westerns, including the old John Wayne ones. But I really like the old Clint Eastwood ones. The Outlaw Josie Whales is my favorite, but they're all good.

I got nearly two terrabyte external and just purchased another terrabyte external drive in an online shop
I am now transferring from my third backup that only got half a terra to my fourth having a terrabyte
Every ten seconds my laptop with 150 giga is complaining I made a mistake ( sure did )

I adhere to my mission to have a back up for the back up . As long as my house does not burn down I got a back up . I have no back up yet in my bankvault .
This is called double redundancy

Whilst the two external drives talk to each other ; I seem to be able to go online
I now have Outlaw Josey Wales and according to my provider I got 60 gigabyte for free download left in this calendar month so I have to get moving  :D

It sure is GOOD that I have found so many Eastwood fans right here in my castle. I think I own about all of his movies and my favorite is indeed Outlaw Josey Wales! I watched Pale Rider so much I almost knew it word for word!!! Preacher.....Preacher.....Preacher! Oddly our media claims both of the films were flops? I have found that any film that gets rave reviews usually sucks in my viewing department!
I would also suggest Broken Trail and Open Range for newcomers in the westerns!

My wife and children DON'T share my love for westerns so I usually watch them alone! I see it as their loss not mine!

I saw a Western in the 60's, can't remember the name of it, it was a comedy & I think one of the stars might have been either Richard Widmark or Kirk Douglas, not sure.

Anyhow it was a scream & I remember almost laughing my head off.  Blokes on horses riding through houses, can't remember the plot, it was real funny back then.  If I saw it again now, I might not even crack a smile, tastes change.  I'm not a big fan of Westerns, but may be this one would top my list if I had one.

Every night at 9 pm my wife moves to her tv upstairs and leaves me the tv with the decoder to the satelite filmchannel
She mainly watches talkshows  ::) I go for action and sci fi ( not much westerns any more) Luckily there is again
a steady supply of musical/dance films made the last few years

I just bought a multimedia centre ( small black box ) this should enable me to play my computer films on the TV screen
using the external hard drive . However I still need to buy the HDMI cable which was not provided

The Name of the Rose is an outstanding movie!  I will never forget the Inquisitor walking in on the monks all laughing at another monks mishap. He verbally scolded them and said, Enough, enough! Enough of that laughing as laughing can replace fear and without fear there is no need for the church! (Something along this line) And it has stuck with me ever since!
Of course I will never forget Gwenda the Good Witch asking Dorothy, "Are you a good witch or bad witch?" Guess there is a difference isn't there? Just like a good Catholic or bad Catholic, a good Baptist or bad Baptist or a good Methodist or bad Methodist? The list can go on and on!!!
We can't escape opposites of anything. Positive or Negative! We have to live with it all and learn to tell the difference and most folks aren't very good at it any more! Reading agenda's and reading between the lines is also a unique talent that is dying with us old codgers. The younger generations are too damned busy playing videio games, leaning their head on a cell phone or following it around blindly to know anything else is going on in the world. Addiction has a whole new meaning now!

The book is more like "schooling" since Umberto Eco is a professor . Very intresting but hardly a page turner
So I liked the film better since I got used to action books that have only 2-3 pages per chapter .

I am a huge fan of SMALL chapters! I guess it makes me feel like I am making headway in a book especially those I am not sure I understand or even want to read. When I find a huge book with huge chapters I am discouraged knowing it will probably take me forever to read? Does that make sense to anyone else? Apparently I am so set in my ways that I feel its wrong to walk away from something in the middle? When woodworking I follow steps that I have created in my mind and cannot quit until I finish each step even though I know I can stop at any time and it won't make a bit of difference in the outcome? Don't know whether it is dedication to a routine or just my instincts but I seldom sway from it! So when reading a book I MUST finish a chapter to feel I completed anything!
Title: Re: BEST 5 WESTERNS

When I am READING that means serious business ; I can put down a "bad" book in the middle of a sentence
A good one I HAVE to finish the chapter before I can put it down
This time I am reading Nelson Demille's book The Lions Game
The plot is exceptionally good but the style sucks so badly I have it lying around for a week now preferring my computer game Fallout 3 on which I clocked 127 hours ingame allready . Imagine I even look at goldprices only every hour  ;D

I started two new collections
One is films were I passed the 200 films mark and realise I am collecting
The other is for my wife who drove me creazy to get her a set of swarovski annimals on ebay
( roughly 40% of the shopprice )
I promissed her a stand of 6 animals so I am bargainhunting well ahead of the holliday season

Paint Your Wagon you may not like my book! I have no style primarily because I am not a writer. I can claim to be a storyteller but nothing more than that! If your looking for style this Hoosier may already be in trouble! ;D

Oh I don't think so
Lack of style is if you can flip 10 pages of a book and read on without having lost the thread of the story
Supreme lack of style is if you read one page every ten pages and still now what happened at the end of the book

Ok I got myself a multimediaplayer for 50 euro
This little wonder will take any avi; dvdrip, wmv etc of 700 kilobytes and upscale it to high definitions at 1080 p ( parallel) on your tv in real time from a harddrive ( if your tv is full HD capable )
Just watch out because you need a HDMI cable and they tried to ask 130 euro for the cable and I bought the best goldplated cable for 11 euro in an internet shop

So I watched Rio Conchos ( the musice was still as good as I remembered ; the film not )
I watched Bad day at Black rock ( Ok but not great )
I watched Outlaw Josey Wales ; Outstanding ; I do not understand how I ever missed seeing that film

This new toy is a marvel ; you stop the film and next day or whenever it will resume where you stopped the film ( I was never able to do that with a DVD )

Welcome to the OJW Fan CLub!!! Both the Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider were deemed failures by movie critics over here so that just goes to show you they don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. It is darned hard to find a bad Eastwood movie as I don't think they made it yet?

I saw it a long time ago and I liked it . Not sure what my appreciation would be today since some comedies have a way of becoming " boring " 30 years later

The Good Bad and the Ugly

Outlaw Josey Wales.

Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox--a comedy with  George Segal and Goldie Hawn

Cat Baleu

There was a movie about the Barbary coast, but  I can't remember the name of it.  I think it became a series for a little while with William Shanter as a federal agent "here to help" who was a master of disguises.

I also like the series Alis Smith and Jones before Peter Duel  croaked himself and the show got  canceled.  That really sucked out loud.

Oh I forgot Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman. heehehee "Looks aweful growed for boy"

Still favor Outlaw Josey Wales just a tad bit over Pale Rider! "All of us died a little bit in that war!"

Today I saw Jeremiah Johnson again with Robert Redford
I had forgotten how nice a film this is (1972)

Nothwest Passage......not a western as you have been talking about, but one that takes place in 1759 during the French/Indian wars.  If any of you young'uns ever get the chance to watch this movie, please don't pass up the opportunity. It has the Roger's Rangers and some of the most spectacular locations (central Idaho) to film. This is when Spencer Tracey was in his prime and maybe the best movie ever made by Robert Young. I personally likes the part of Walter Brennen. I would bet that PYW would especially like this one.

All great movies! 3:10 to Yuma is one of the better Westerns of recent years. Deadwood is a great show too, as long as you don't mind alot of vulgar language  :D

Has anyone seen "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford"?
Brad Pitt plays Jesse James. Its kinda slow, but I liked it. I think its probably a fairly realistic take on the end of Jesse James' life.

I looked back through all 5 pages of this thread and never found this movie title anywhere. Not even on PYW's list of western movies, so thought it should be mentioned as it has got to be one of the all  time greats.  It was directed by John Ford and stared John Wayne in the  1956 classic " The Searchers".
The movie takes place following the Civil war and most of the action is in western Texas and New Mexaco. Also playing parts are Jeff Hunter, Natalie Wood, Vera Miles and Ward Bond.  It's a story of a returning vet (John Wayne) looking for his niece (Natalie Wood), who the Comanche indians have taken captive. (based on a true story)

If you haven't seen this picture, you haven't seen a great western movie, so take a look if you have a chance. :o

I have seen it two or three times and got it in digital format to be seen again this year
However it is not a film you want to see over and over again I feel

I am sure it was not in the minipack because there are many spaghetti westerns in there
with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer . Lovely but pure "entertainment"
One of my favourites is still High Noon because of the musical score .

I have still like 30 westerns to choice from tonight  :) The wonders of digital technology finally talking
to my standard LCD TV screen converting a 700 megabyte "film" into the 4.7 Giga by interleafing up
to 1080 parallel quality ; instanteneously . That multimedia centre at 98 euro is the best buy I ever made
in entertainment . :)

All this discussion about westerns made me look up a movie I saw years ago called "Evil Roy Slade". Starred Mickey Rooney. Had a few funny moments but will never reach the heights of other movies mentioned it the thread.  I watched it all again on Youtube.  I still chuckle when evil Roy learns that a shoe horn is an aid to getting a new shoe on. Marvellous what size shoe you can put on with a shoe horn held to your throat.  ;D

Yes the famous region 1 and region 2
50 and 60 herz cycle
and the color standard differences ( we are PAL color )
( On reflection they would probably work on a computer DVD drive with full codecs
I have like 30 codecs for the moment and a direct adapter/ interleaving device that makes
700 kilobytes into a 4.7 mega on the fly and playing it on TV too in real time : this emtec
multimedia device was only 95 euro )

Those that bought them can still make computer compressed copies from the pirate bay
It is the middle of the night here and their search engine still shows overloaded most of the time on a weekday night
Season one and season two are a 10 gigabyte download

Today I watched for the first time
Pat Garret and Billy the kid 1973

I was quite amazed because I did not know Bob Dylan played in any movies
and he was in this movie as Alias and of course the movie was full of Dylan songs
J Coburn was Pat Garret

Now I understand why even in 1973 this film never made it to Belgium
5 nekkid hoes in one bedroom with the aging Pat Garret is too much for
the censored Belgium
That was the time only Germany and Holland would broadcast a naked breast  ???

yes the US authorities are such hypochrites
On the beaches they virtually make the people walk cloathed like if it were winter
and in the seedy rooms they make the most horrible XXX rated flicks

I remember once in Florida I caused a commotion
My wife was fitting clothes and I walked with her into the "fitting room for woman" like
we do here all the time . I had to use my passport to prove I came from a Kingdom and was only a retard and not a pervert  ???

Nowadays Belgian censorship allows a lot more. I think one of the first films to allow nudes was good ole Emanuelle and a dutch film with Willeke van Amelrooy

Yes all the blood, guts and ways to kill other people is good for our children. Admiring and respecting the body we were born with would be a shame! Of course, from the advertising side of things, if I can make the world ashamed of what they have it is apparent they will spend all their hard earned money trying to look more acceptable? What a great idea and it works! ;)

I used to get a real kick out of our preacher, years ago, who about once a year spent Sunday damning lust and sex. I guess no one else in the church noticed his wife sitting with their seven kids at the time? There was another local pastor who actually got caught (how can I say this politely) having a really good time with the church Kindergarten teacher in the church? Well I guess a man or woman has to do what a man or woman has to do? And when all else fails perhaps God made me do it or God works in strange ways?

The best sermon I ever heard, a few short years ago, while visiting a new church my wife wanted to see was on "Submittting to your Man" no matter what or when. I must have elbowed my wife a million times during that sermon but it is apparent she was not listening! :'(

The bottom line is we are just another one of the animals living on this planet and, like it or not, we are born with natural survival instincts and one of those is to reproduce. Guess I have a real problem with any religion that tells there clergy or membership they can't do that which is a basic instinct of all creation!

I worship at the church of St August
I want a goldcoin per week as my due
I hate the competition of Rome who has too many pederasts ; why do they think that sodomizing
young boys is less sinfull then taking a willing woman ?
And why do they just transfer priests that have been caught untill somebody goes to court ?
They are a dying breed ; we now have african priests  ??? because most others are
dead or senile or in jail for sodomy

It seems many of us see the same picture! I thought about starting the Twoshadows Foundation as I am sure I could come up with a worthy cause! (ME) And given the time to develope a line of bull I am sure I can get the world to donate to such an imaginary cause. Millions are given every day under the disguise of helping. The one that really sticks to my crawl is helping those poor helpless animals? What do the animals do with all that money? ;D I suppose the squirrels bury their share for a hard cold winter? ;)

I once was asked by my wife to go to a website
It was a meddler peddler traffiquer site
The guy was supposed to have a psycology training
He sure did have that

You entered the site and he played like 60 seconds of a turning spiral
the kind that can help you get into hypnosis
And he said over and over again you were feeling better and better by the second
Then he ended his tale by saying you would feel lousy if you did not donate him 25 euro

I laughed so hard it hurt . I could not write the swindler but I told my wife if she ever went to
see that guy I would divorce her. Her kinesiste goes to see this guy every month and pays like
40 euro for 10 minutes and she feels good again for a month . Stupid C****

Point is that the church of Twoshadows Ultimate Redemption Days ( TURD ) is probably cheaper
Why don't you ask the TKO to put up a swirling spiral with a paypal account added and
ask one dollar for ultimate forgiveness and comfort and early bliss :P

PS I will take 10% as finders fee of this idea :P

What a great couple of answers from the two I expected to do so! Old Dan I know there is much good being done but at the same time there are deceptions which makes it very difficult for one to know the difference. Being a lifelong outdoorsman I see efforts which every hunter and fisherman helped pay for but advertising to help the animals or save the animals is a touch swallow when they lead you to believe they all are helpless stupid creatures who can't live without us? Looking back over history I believe US just might be the problem in most cases.
I have a tremedous love for the outdoors and appreciate every second I have spent in the field for whatever the reasons on any given day. The respect I have nurtured for all living things is something I take great pleasure in.
Its organizations, popping up all over, with their hand out making claims they can't back up really riles me!
Boy I sure have been on a roll lately! Must be cabin fever at its finest? ;D

I read a book that in the dying days of Rome they tried to survive by making the pope and the religion . That they burned all books that Jesus was married and that his wife was Maria Magdalena ; and that in fact he left his church to his wife Maria Magdalena
Now when they burned the books and made her a whore they made all women excluded from priesthood . No pesky family problems . Just the Emperor and the Pope and everybody obeys.

There was a very intresting newstory today . The brother of the pope ( who was an hitlerjugend ; the pope that is ) The brother is supposed to be implicated in 20 years of sodomy in a boys choir . Knowing and not speaking ? We will never know because this story will disappear like the misdeeds of all bankers disappeared

I watched Ulzana's raid yesterday
Good film
I forgot the Apache bound their victims to a fence or tree and build a fire between their legs to roast them . I think this would be more fitting then using the guillotine on banksters .
Are there enough Apache left to care out the order ?

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THOSE 5 WESTERNS I SUGGESTED---THEY STAND THE TEST OF TIME---THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB REALLY DID EXIST IN WYOMING IN THE LATE 1800'S EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE BIG RICH CATTLEMEN---THEY HAD LOTS OF MONEY AND POWER--IN THOSE DAYS THE GOVERNOR SELECTED THE STATE SENATORS SO IF YOU CONTROLLED THE GOVERNOR---YOU CONTROLLED THE SENATORS----THESE WERE CATTLEMEN--VERY ANTI SHEEP AND SOD BUSTERS(FARMERS WHO PUT UP BARBED WIRE AROUND THEIR FARMS)--NASTY TIMES IN THE WEST........ENJOY

CLINT EASTWOOD'S "UNFORGIVEN" IS STILL ONE OF THE HARDEST OF WESTERNS.....THE TOWN SETTINGS ARE SUPERB AND GENE HACKMAN IS GREAT........I THINK I PUT IT RIGHT BEHIND "THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES"

I saw unforgiven yesterday evening
I realise I saw it twice before but forgot the title . It is an interesting film but it lacks something to make it unforgettable .

Tombstone will be next on my list to view  :)

I saw Tombstone again
Fantastic filming and directors cutting . Fantastic music and fast moving .
I had seen it before and the only thing that stuck in my memory was the death of
doc Holiday
This movie should be amongst anybody's top ten
