Back in the old days, ie before 1968-69 the US $1 bill was redeemable for either a silver dollar or later on silver granules. All US $1 bills issued between 1933-1963 were these silver certificates, beginning in 1963 the government started issuing Federal Reserve Notes which we still have today. The silver certificates were issued until ca. 1964-5 with the 1957 date. The value of this note in this grade, ie VF would be about $2.50-$3.00 or so. Unfortunately they are not redeemable for silver anymore, since the government defaulted on them like it did with the Gold Certificates in 1933.
