5 Dollar Question
January 25, 2008, 04:01:01 PM
I've really been fascinated by the 1988 Australian 5 Dollar coin that Muckeye sent me.

At first I thought it would be neat to collect them.  But, looking through my McDonalds book I notice the proof versions are pretty pricey.  And, I don't know if albums are made for them.

Anyway, my question is this.  Have any been minted for circulation, or are they strictly collector coins?

Thanks for any answers.

 :) :) :) :)

All strictly for collectors, Gary.  If my memory serves me right the 1988 ones were available through all branches of the Commonwealth Bank for $5.

There was one year that Large coins or medals were given to all Australian School Children, but can't remember what year or what it was.  My youngest was in Primary School at the time & he's 36 now.

One more thing for me to go hunting for.

I'm curious too. What is the composition of these coins?

The 1988 New Parliament House $5 coin is Aluminium Bronze. There was also a cased proof issue and a silver proof issue included in the Masterpiece in silver edition (92.5% silver/ 7.5% copper).

Nancy, The only medal I can remember being given to the children was in 1988, to celebrate the Bi-centenary.
That was the year of my Daughters birth. She was given that and also a $50 bank account.
This is the medal...

Gary, sorry for getting a bit off track.

The $5 1996 Sir Donald Bradman was also issued for face value of $5, mounted on a card from the Westpac Bank.  :)

BTW it was a Bi metal coin, very pretty Outer ring has a Silver appearance (made from Stainless steel) and the inner core was Aluminum/Bronze which has a Gold color to it.

I hope that when the powers that be do introduce the $5 coin in Australia that they will choose this Bi-metal design for the coin itself

Steve,  that's it, I just checked.  I've got 2 of those & 2 of the 1988 New Parliament House $5 coin.  I'd just about forgotten about them.

My son had to be in High School not primary as I thought. In 1988 he was 17.  ;D

No problems, Gary.

I hope to be seeing a picture of that $5 coin you received, soon.

Only four days left in January.

Do you know how to get a picture from your camera to the computer?
