Does anyone like Aussie Gold Sovereigns?

Following are pics (excuse the quality please) of the first 2 for my Perth Mint collection of these coins. I am aiming for a set of coins at least UNC in grade and realise that some of them are expensive. Cheers.

Sovereigns were minted in Australia from 1853 up to 1931, at three mints: M-Melbourne, P-Perth and S-Sydney (sovereigns were also minted at several other mints throughout the British Empire). Issues from the Perth Mint began in 1899 and continued up to 1931.

A sovereign was the same specifications throughout the empire: 22mm across, 7.9881 grams, 22 carat (.917 fine), 0.2354 ounces AGW - almost ¼ ounce.

For Perth coins, the scarcest dates are 1899 and from 1924 through to 1928. Most other dates can be bought in AU for just over bullion value.

Hi buda, as Sap mentions full sovs contain about a 1/4 troy ounce of gold so use a site like kitco for the value of gold per ounce and divide by 4. For example if gold was $1000 per ounce a full sovereign would have $250 of gold in it, roughly. Half sovereigns about half that. Less if they have a lot of wear.

Australia has a number of difficult dates in both half and full sovs. A complete set in all mints would be near impossible. Perth set is a good choice Rusty!

My stepfather has one that came over on the boat with his Grandparents in 1881, it is an 1877M.  I still marvel that somehow it traveled from Australia to Cornwall, then from Cornwall with his ancestors to the USA.  I myself am only blessed with an 1862 Halfpenny that also came over on the boat, but my Step Grandfather gave me that when I was a kid.

Hi All,
I have been away for a days. To add to what Sap wrote, the Perth Sovereigns ran from 1899 to 1931, making 33 the numer of them to get. There are some rarer (more expensive) dates; 1899, 1925, 1926 and 1927. Most of the others range from $350 to $500 AU in price for an UNC coin. A full set in UNC would cost around $21,000 AU. A lesser grade will be cheaper but, if available, UNC is what I am aiming for and it will take a while to get. F, VF, EF and aUNC are listed at bullion price plus 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% as applicable for a large percentage of the years.

LOL. It will be like the saying   " This won't hurt, Did it?"    I see the 1925 and 1927 Perth issues are getting up there in UNC as well. I might have to talk to the friendly bank manager.    Cheers.
