1997 $1 coin
November 23, 2007, 02:06:02 PM
Digging through the bins at the coin store today, I found this little gem.  One that I didn't have yet. :)

Do add this coin to my collection?

G'day Tracey.
There were two Kingsford Smith dollars issued that year.
The other has a smaller head and plane superimposed over a map of the world.
It was not issued for general circulation as only about 245,000 were minted.

"Smithy" was also on the decimal $20 note from 1966-1994.

I live in Minnesota and just got back from visiting a daughter in Illinois for Thanksgiving. Yesterday, we visited a few antique stores, then hit a few loan shops. In a 'junk' box at one of the stores, I picked out a fine 1943 Aussie Florin (silver) and a U K 1947 'Two Shillings'....at $1 each. The Florin was the only silver in the batch.

Since joining KOTCT, I've taken particular interest in Aussie coins....thanks everyone in expanding my collections of coins. Goose  Cy - Minn

If any airplane experts read this, can you tell me if the craft pictured is a Ford Tri-Motor.  When I was a kid, I was even more interested in airplanes than coins, but not sure I can trust my memory.

The Southern Cross was a fokker vll-3m, it looked similiar to the Ford Tri-motor and was powered by three Wright J-5s, same as the Ford.
