Combining my two hobbies.
July 01, 2008, 05:29:40 PM
My two hobbies become one, with these stamps issued in 2005.

They depict an 1855 Sovereign, The first Australian coin.
The stamps are valued at about $9 for the 2. I can afford that.
Don't think I could afford the real coin.

Anyone else collect stamps too?

I used to collect first day covers, however lost interest.

I do have a nice set, in a binder.  Each panel in the binder gives information about a U.S. President, and on the panel are included two stamps that either were issued during his time in office, or relate to him.

 :) :) :) :)

I know that for 40 years now I have somewhere first day covers of Vatican City postage stamps
I looked last year and could not find them but they have to be somewhere
My belgian stamps somebody rightly advised I should use for sending letters and packages since afte 40 years they are still only worth face value

Steve,

I guess I do still collect...in a way.

Each time I have received coins from Australia I cut off the stamps and put them in a drawer.

Can't help myself!!

I thought for sure Triggersmob was referring to beer and women!!! ;D But I see he is STILL on topic here with coins and stamps! I bought some coins and stamps out of Canada a few years ago that are still very high on my "keep" list. Seeing how the silver Moose is selling in the $200 range and the Grizzly Bear is supposed to be the first coin impossible to counterfeit (so is the stamps) and is an $8 dollar coin on top of that. I believe I have the Grizzly Bear, Polar Bear, the Moose, the Loon and the Whitetail Deer in the series. I now regret passing on the Wild Horses from the series. While I am not a stamp collector (used to be) I am impressed with these HUGE stamps Canada made for these sets!

Now lets get back to the beer and women. I guess there is a woman on Triggersmob's coins but I am waiting for the beer!!! ;D

Someone mention beer?
Whenever I post a parcel I always try to put a mixture of Aussie stamps on the package rather than those machine printed sticker thingies. Just in case the receiver is into stamps.

Sorry to disappoint you, Twoshadows.

I have many coins and stamps with women on them, but I can't recall one that would have beer.
Maybe someone that knows how to use photoshop, could whip one up for you.

It is a miscoception since Belgium probably has more speciality beers then Germany especially in the brown black abbey beers of triple strength that is like 12 degrees alcohol ( whisky has 40 degrees )
The pictured beer Geuze can only be brewed in caves around Brussels since it needs bacteria and live fermentation . My brother had several bottles exploding in his cellar since the fermentation continued . Normally the bottles have a cork like a champaign bottle with a wire around it .
And I never saw that stamp before since they rather sell them to collectors then to lettre posting public

There was another stamp I saw, Trappiste.  I know well that Belgium has the largest variety of specialty beers, but still, at least when I think of beer, I still think Germany and it's biergartens and oktoberfest and all of that.  Might be because I do have German heritage, on my Mom's side.

Trappist Orval is one of those abbey beers they have in triple strenghts
Germany and Luxemburg have fantastic white beers. Even the French in the Alsace close to Germany Luxemburg Switzerland have a fantastic beer called Kronenburg
(white of course )
I was in Munchen during the oktoberfeste and they throw chickens at you but what you really have to duck is when they start throwing beermugs at you  ;D

My uncle collected stamps and the Grand Orval series is the most expensive series of stamps which I don't have of course since another nephew inherited all the stamps

I collected stamps a long long long time ago.  Somewhere, perhaps in some hidden portion of the cellar there is a box of stamps from the 1860's-1930's mostly Italian and German that someone gave me years ago.  I also had old mintsets, but by the time I was about 12-13 I decided too many hobbies and gave up stamps, but of course I never got rid of them.  I remember checking some of the stamps vs. a 1967 catalogue, and some of them were pretty pricey even then.  Who knows, I might be sitting on a gold mine, and not even care.

I stopped collecting stamps 40 years ago . Three years ago I bought a new catalogue and taking 20% of catalogue value since they are selling at dealers at 40% of catalogue I made my inventory.
First I cannot locate my Vatican first day covers which may have been stolen during my moving houses 20 years ago  ??? I lost a microscope and my brother all his stripalbums .
Second it seems my complete collection may be worth like half an ounce of gold but half the value is in the first 6 stamps and for the live of me
I cannot decipher the counterstamping nor the exact catalogue number and I sure hate to give them to a vendor who probably would strait faced tell me they are worht 5 euro and then sell them for 500 euro

They are all 10 and 20 cents stamps

Dear Triggersmob:
The Coin + Stamps are nice.
I am sure, many of the Members of the Castle would have started first with Stamps.   With lesser time on stamp, started/changed to coins.
I was collecting stamps and donated them around 1,500 stamps to the Kennedy Memorial Library Funds during 1965.
Then I started U.S.Stamps and on a rainy day, it was gone.
Now I enjoy the coin collection.
BUT I ALWAYS AFFIX NEW COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS ON ALL MY LETTERS TO CASTLE MEMBERS, SO THAT THEY CAN ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF OUR STAMPS.
Some of our stamps also have fragrance/smell on them.
Sincerely,
George

It is by giving others, we actually receive from G

In belgium doctors still visit patients at home .My wife gets regular doctors visits and so I often have discussions
with our favourite doctor . One of his patients was bugglerised and they had thrown all silver coins on the floor not worhty of
carrying  ??? ??? ??? The stupid shits probably took a lot of things worth less like a computer and a television etc which secondhand go for a
quarter or less of the original price
They also left an original painting on the wall . ;D
Of course all the silver coins were full of fingerprints and bangs etc Wanton destruction.
But I am sure they would not have taken stamps .
A used early belgian postage stamp may be quoted 100 euro but the going price is 20 euro or less

That's a bit of a relief--and seems to be the same general price as years ago. I guess stamp values haven't changed as much as coins?  ???  I have a lot of early Finnish and Russian stamps too...but I guess the market is rather limited there, lol.

Stamps are disgusting
In general I can get the price I paid in 1970 and loose 38 years of intrest at 4%
I have first day covers like the chappel of reine elisabeth which i paid 10 dollars which are not worth 2 dollars after 38 years
If I had put that amount of money in gold coins I would still have had no more but at least I would have had the hope of getting more the next few years

I did a dozen years of collecting before I finished Univ and all my pocketmoney went into stamps instead of boozing it up like my contemporaries did
Lucky for me my wife started working long before me and she bought a 20 F Napoleon every time she had the 1965 price of those .
Then I had to do the compulsory 12 months of army duty getting like half a euro per day 20 paper franks that is  as "salary" I got married before the army
and my wife got like 40 euro per month in compensation  ??? ??? ??? One year of my life down the drain but I learned to shut up in the face of authority and to lie straithfaced and to get even every chance I got
