2007 Wooden Dollar
October 16, 2007, 03:31:04 AM
I have instructed a local manufacturer to prepare a 2007 prototype wooden dollar to present to the KOTCT before committing to  production. They have agreed to do the first one for about $20, in the event we don't order, and I have instructed them to proceed. Will post a photo as quickly as I can get the wooden dollar from them. You will notice a huge difference between the 2006 and 2007 and WE will decide whether or not to produce them.
I think it could be a good money maker towards the 2008 medallion project which in turn may lower the costs of our medallions next year. The choice will be up to you the members of KOTCT. Will keep you posted!

And, Old Dan, I want you to know it as really hard to pass up both the dragon and the buffalo for this new wooden dollar but I sucked in my gut and made the call!

I do hope there is a strong continued interest in the wooden dollars as it gives us a chance to use them, not only as a collectable, but as cheap advertising as well. And, the mere fact the opportunity to make a few bucks towards the 2008 medallion quest makes them a worthwhile effort. Every buck we put back can be applied towards those medallions thus lowering the personal cost to each of us when the time comes.

There are those who do collect such items and have done so for years. They are cheap souviners while traveling and a reminder of places visited. Many communities and businesses use them during special celebrations and in many instances they are honored as cash in specific stores. Been around for years and probably always will be. I have seen some pretty neat designs but do want all of you to understand these wooden dollars I am having done now are NOT your same old wooden dollars! Technology has changed many things and you are about to see the KOTCT wooden dollar enter a new age, so to speak!

Quite honestly I don't collect wooden dollars either but ours did stir my interest in the hobby. And, on occassion I will pick one up if visiting a new area. Don't have many but the ones I do have mean something to me and I intend to continue seeking them out in my travels.

I will say this! I am very very proud of our medallions and dollars we have brought forth in the last year as it is an amazing feat, in many ways, but more importantly it gives us credibility and will let the world forever know we were here!!! Whether it is wooden, silver, brass, pewter or copper is not important. The fact that we did it as a group does matter! I have my medallions in wooden display holders here in the house and every time I notice one of them I can't help but smile and feel good about this group. I thank you all for that!

I have the 2007 prototype "woodie" here with me now. We are looking at a cost of $1.75 each unfinished for these lasered wooden dollars. Personally I don't want to pay another .50 to have them "finished" as a guy or gal can spray them with about any kind of wood finish should you desire to do so. It is not like they will be circulating in bad weather or anything like that! I will attempt to get a photo yet this evening so everyone can see both sides of this 2007 wooden dollar.
If we are to attempt to make any monies at all off of these woods I would suggest 2 for $5.00 with another $1.00 for shipping? Any thoughts on these? I intend, at this time, to have the manufacturer go ahead and produce at least 50 of them, as this first one cost me $12.00, but if enough interest is generated we could go ahead and do 100? As always this will probably be a one time deal. Lets hear it and photos are coming!

Oh, I might add these woodies have reeded edges!

I'll take a pair, but honestly don't have much need for more than that.  It isn't like I'll be selling them on eBay or anything.  Although, if I can afford it, I will be buying more than one medallion this time around.

Do add this coin to my collection?

I'll take a pair, and for the Aussies, maybe once figures are known  & to keep forum costs to a minimum, 1 mail out to 1 Aussie could be done & that person distributes them here in OZ.  I could take it on & donate the mailing costs here as a small contribution to the forum.

I posted a question regarding the Wooden Dollar and Australian Customs.  It seems to have gone.  Nonetheless, I understand that there are issues with importing 'wooden materials' into Australia? Will the wooden dolars clear customs?

Yass...no problem with customs but could be one with AQIS (Quarantine).    Would depend on thickness of the wooden dollar.  Could be subject to AQIS doing an inspection or could need treatment.

We will cross that bridge when we get to it.

These wooden dollars are about 38mm and not as thick as a real silver dollar. I don't think there will be a problem getting them in to any country as their main concern, if I understand correctly, is untreated or raw wood that would pose a huge threat.

I have advised the manufacturer to start on the first fifty 2007 wooden dollars. They should be available within a week and a half. That will give me time to get some bubble mailers picked up and address's gathered up. PayPal or U.S. cash can be accepted from members cross the big pond and U.S. members also have the option of a personal check. Please email with your payment option and address so that I can get this program started and I will provide you my info as well.

I would think $2 would send these to most parts of the world as there is NO weight involved. Guess we will see what it costs and go from there? Nevol has volunteered to accept all Aussie orders and then mail from her address so that may be the way to go. We will know more when I take the first batch to the Post Office!

I have started shipping the 2007 wooden dollars as of Nov. 6th. Increase the order from 50 to 70 and will have all of them by noon on the 9th. Will continue to ship as payments are received.
Would like some opinions on these smaller (38mm) lasered wooden dollars when you receive them. Thanks!

You won't find many wooden dollars with a reeded edge!!! The KOTCT is always thinking of ways to be different! The woodies will fit into a 38mm airtite shoud you want to protect it from the elements and termites!

The lasered woodies cost more but the finished product is well worth it! Don't think we will be buying the painted ones any longer as we can make the design as complex as we choose with this manufacturer. And having a reeded edge? How cool is that?

I think they are great! They are a vast improvement compared to the 06's & at a tiny increase in cost.

I reckon we could get the same company to do other 'Special Commemorative' Woodies for the KOTCT as a Forum fund raiser.  Any old reason will do, say when we reach  100 active Members?  ;D ;D  We could take lessons from The Perth Mint.  ;) ;) ;) ;)

Yeah, yeah, I know, we'd have to define 'active' though.  Some people register & then we never hear from them again.

When I bought some spare sets a while back I got them for any new Aussie Knights that entered the Castle. That way, I'd only have to post them locally.

So far, I've only found homes for 2 pair of Woodies, so I have an idea for what I might do with some of them.

::) A fundraising auction, just like the NZ 5¢ one I'm currently running.  All proceeds would go to the KotCT coffers to be allocated wherever they're needed.

I've got 5 x 2006 & 7 x 2007, but of those one pair has already been promised to LordPercy.

I'll have a think about it, and will post here in a few days what I decide to do.  It'll depend on how much interest there is in them.
