Pirate Cobb
April 11, 2014, 12:08:38 PM

My latest acquisition is an item that was labelled "Pirate Cobb  C.1600"  Weight:  1.5 gms      Size:  11-12mm

Can anyone confirm this and do you know any other information about this type of coin.

I can tell you that it is a copper Maravedi, most likely not coined at the Mexico City mint.

These coins were often counterstamped with different values through the years.

The top photo is the Lion of Leon Spain, and the bottom photo shows the Castle of Castille Spain.

There is some writing around the edges, but I can't quite make out what it says.  The writing may help with further information on the coin.

Do add this coin to my collection?

1.5 grams is the weight of a 2 maravedis coin and like EK said it's not a new world coin but spanish, it seems that it was struck at segovia's "old house" (casa vieja) mint (vertical aqueduct in this particular coin).
Date is unreadable, it should be on the "lion" side before "Hispan..." but the style looks Philip III.
