Kittys!  Unfortunately, those will probably be forever outside of my collecting range.  I think the earliest kitteh I have in my collection is ... Spanish Maravedi coppers from the 1600s?

Do add this coin to my collection?

I couldn't help but laugh the first time I saw Edix's post. I thought to myself this is like putting cheese on a mouse trap! I knew this would catch a Kitty! And out of Texas she roared at the first sound of Kitty and it didn't take her long to get here! I saw a whole bunch of shiney new Kittens on Ebay the other day and I actually was tempted to buy one and send it down south but then I realized we should not spoil our Kitten! (And I didn't know what she already owned)

Those are contemporary issues, produced by the Kingdom of Northshield, a Society for Creative Anachronism organization. They commemorate the reigns of respective Kings and their consorts. The Northshield moneyer, Bartel Fitz Neel (who engraves and hand strikes the coins) sent me those and some of other previous reigns, tournaments and site tokens. Amazingly cool stuff. Most have a mintage of under 300, but he also sent me a test strike for a planned striking of 10,000 pieces at the upcoming Pennsic Wars this summer. They engraved seven obverse and 5 reverse dies for this immense project.

Twoshadows, there are days when I don't even know what I've got in my kitty collection myself!

Edix, I should have known these would be something like that.  I know you like to collect contemporary pieces minted privately-  but the medival lettering has always thrown me for a loop.

Do add this coin to my collection?

The crude individual lettering on these, if you look closely, was created using a variety of differently shaped punches into the dies.

Here's an illustrated pdf on the making of the Stephen and Ailene piece. So, it's actually a jaguar! (The other piece is a Rampant catamount (mountain cat) over a bend Raguly, which is a heraldry term, so I guess that image should be tilted up counterclockwise about 45 degrees.)
